Another memory chip shortage? How soon we forget.
It should come as no surprise to anyone that the stampede to build massive new data centers to support the artificial intelligence boom is causing a serious strain on supplies of high-end memory chips. But other factors are in play as well: a near-monopoly by a limited number of suppliers, numerous potential logistical choke points, geopolitical strife and rising prices. We review all of those elements in a conversation with Graham Scott, chief procurement officer with electronics manufacturing giant Jabil. He lays out the where and the why of the current chip shortage, discusses the impact of AI on the semiconductor supply chain, and suggests some strategies for survival by manufacturers who are struggling to get a handle on future demand. The problem: It’s an industry of “feast or famine.” And right now, famine prevails. Hosted by Bob Bowman, Editor-in-Chief of SupplyChainBrain.
