U.S. President Donald Trump said the U.S. would be removing all tariffs on British whisky imports, as a gesture of goodwill after King Charles and Queen Camilla made a four-day official visit to the U.S., reports the Guardian.

“In Honor of the King and Queen of the United Kingdom, who have just left the White House, soon headed back to their wonderful Country, I will be removing the Tariffs and Restrictions on Whiskey having to do with Scotland’s ability to work with the Commonwealth of Kentucky on Whiskey and Bourbon,” Trump said in a post on social media April 30, using the Irish and American spelling of the liquor, which is spelled “whisky” in the U.K.

The U.S. and the U.K. signed a deal in 2025 allowing Washington to impose a 10% baseline tariff on imports of most British goods.

The market for U.K. Scotch whisky (also known simply as Scotch), which is made exclusively in Scotland, has suffered recently from those higher levies and declining rates of alcohol consumption. While others types of whisky are made in Wales and England, the vast majority comes from Scotland. The Scotch Whisky Association (SWA) estimates the tariffs have cost the industry £4 million ($5.45 million) a week.

SWA Chief Executive Mark Kent welcomed the news, saying in a statement April 30, “This deal is a significant boost for the Scotch whisky industry in our most valuable export market. Distillers can breathe a little easier during a period of significant pressure on the sector.”

In 2025, Diageo, the parent company of spirit brands including Johnnie Walker, Talisker and Lagavulin, said it would reduce production at some of its distilleries to balance out lower demand.

All the same, the U.S. continues to consume vast quantities of Scotch. According to SWA figures exports to the U.S. during 2025 fell by 4% in value to £933 million. Volume fell more significantly, down 9.2% on the previous year to the equivalent of 120 million bottles, still almost one for every two American adults of drinking age.
