Georgia's Port of Brunswick is planning a new $100 million berth for roll-on/roll-off cargo, as well as improvements to outdoor vehicle storage, dredging and other harbor modifications.
According to a May 4 release from the Georgia Ports Authority, construction at Brunswick on a fourth berth to dock a vessel with an overall length of 975 feet is already 30% complete, with the berth scheduled to open in November 2027. The Port of Brunswick also completed an estimated $284 million in self-financed improvements during the 2025 fiscal year that ran from July 1, 2024 to June 30, 2025.
“Our vision for the Port of Brunswick is to be a true world-class shipping and logistics hub for our RoRo customers," said Georgia Ports President and CEO Griff Lynch, noting that the opening of the fourth berth will allow vessel operators to turn ships faster and save on costs.
The port is planning to finish outer harbor dredging in September 2026 as well, which will allow fully loaded ships to transit the channel without having to wait for high tide. A separate project will help widen channel bends, and expand the turning basin for vessels docking at the port's Colonel's Island terminal. Other initiatives include a $22 million project to boost rail capacity, and an $11 million project to raise a 20-acre lot near Berth 4 by three feet to reduce potential damage from storm-related flooding.
The Port of Brunswick was the nation's busiest port for automobiles for the second year running in 2025, handling 770,000 units of vehicles, as well as more than 53,00 units of heavy machinery. A total of 731 ships called the port last year, with 607 of those calling Colonel's Island.
