As climate change rises rapidly up the business agenda, organizations in all industries are beginning to realize that if they are to adequately understand their carbon footprint or the risks that they face from climate change, they must extend their focus into their supply chain.
In fact, up to 80 percent of a retailer's carbon footprint and between 40 percent to 60 percent for consumer-goods makers, high-tech players and other manufacturers is found upstream in the supply chain through activities such as processing, packaging and transportation.
It is clear why companies need to be concerned about greenhouse gas emissions beyond their operational control. Significant business risks are associated with not doing so, and could trickle down to their customers if left unmanaged.
