The liner services group of Crowley Maritime Corp. is adding 500 new 40-foot high-cube containers. The acquisition supplements the carrier's existing equipment fleet of more than 45,000 units, while allowing for the phase-out of some older containers. The new boxes, with a capacity of 2,700 cubic feet, will be used in all of Crowley's liner-service operations in Latin America, the Caribbean and Puerto Rico. Addition of the containers, along with other equipment, represents an investment of more than $23m over the last year, according to John Hourihan, Crowley's senior vice president and general manager of Latin America services. Since 2003, the company has invested nearly $240m in modernizing and expanding its intermodal equipment fleet.
