Navis LLC, a vendor of systems for tracking logistics assets, has launched the Navis Edge Manager's Real-Time Locating System (RTLS). The technology features radio frequency identification (RFID) tags which are tied to a Differential Global Positioning System (DGPS), and are affixed to mobile assets at marine terminals or distribution centers. The tag determines its unique ID and geospatial position, then communicates it through a WiFi network to the Navis Edge Manager RTLS application. According to Navis, integration with DGPS allows RFID tags to communicate accurate positional data over existing 802.11 WiFi wireless networks, eliminating the need for expensive RFID reader infrastructure. The Edge manager, Navis's middleware, receives the tag data, filters it and sends the data to Navis's SPARCS TOS, yard management or other applications. The technology uses the data to optimize task assignments to equipment operators, and provide real-time location data for improved visibility and control over terminal assets.
