InSync Software, Inc. has made generally available its GREENTrace application for ensuring the safety of fresh food. The product consists of radio frequency identification (RFID) and sensor-driven software which runs on InSync's Edgeware platform. According to the vendor, GREENTrace deploys RFID, global positioning system (GPS) and other types of sensors to provide end-to-end visibility and traceability of fresh foods as they are harvested, processed, stored and distributed. The software can be deployed within a customer's IT resources or in a software-as-a-service model. The technology traces product from the fields, associating harvest bins with RFID tags using GPS-enabled handheld readers. As the tagged bins travel through the food chain, the software processes real-time data from weigh scales, temperature monitors and other sensor technologies to provide feedback on product status, location and condition. GREENTrace dashboards display key process indicators at each stage. Any deviations from expected times and conditions will trigger alerts which are dispatched on a real-time basis, InSynch said. In the event of contamination, customers can trace the affected product down to the precise GPS field location where it was picked.
