United States Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg has announced awards of more than $50 million in grants safe, efficient transportation systems across the country. 

The grants come from the Strengthening Mobility and Revolutionizing Transportation (SMART) program, designed to provide resources for a variety of transportation technology and projects.  

Now in the program’s second year, SMART grants will be spread over 34 projects in 22 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. Projects will include weather modeling sensors for the Fort Worth Smart Port, highway projects to address work zone safety for crews in Wyoming and Maryland, and drones to deliver emergency medical supplies to remote areas in Pennsylvania’s Allegheny mountains and Maryland’s eastern shore.

"Today's funding will help 34 communities across the country advance innovative solutions for better rail crossings, safer road intersections, improved transit accessibility, and more." 

SMART grants are funded for $500 million across five total years as part of President Joe Biden’s infrastructure package, which was passed in November 2021.
