Illuminating the Path Forward: The Critical Role of Supply Chain Visibility

February 3, 2025
Georg Roesch, VP of Direct Procurement Strategy, JAGGAER

Jaggaer-Roesch.pngAnalyst Insight: Supply chain visibility is no longer just about logistics — it’s a critical enabler for businesses to stay agile and competitive in today’s uncertain environment. The ability to maintain real-time visibility across the supply chain has emerged as a pivotal factor in navigating challenges such as tariffs and heightened geopolitical tensions. This visibility enables businesses to identify vulnerabilities, proactively manage disruptions, and make strategic decisions that foster resilience and agility.

Transforming Challenges into Opportunities

Visibility today provides organizations with a comprehensive view of their supply chain, offering real-time insights into supplier performance, inventory levels and risks at every tier. Yet, many companies struggle to extend visibility beyond Tier 1 suppliers, leaving them exposed to hidden risks, such as delayed shipments, production bottlenecks or noncompliance among Tier 2 and Tier 3 suppliers.

Technologies like AI and data analytics are giving businesses new tools to tackle these challenges head-on. For instance, AI tools can identify alternative suppliers quickly when a disruption occurs, minimizing delays and keeping operations on track. Predictive analytics can flag potential risks, such as inventory shortages or supplier delays, while prescriptive tools recommend specific actions, such as switching to a reliable supplier with available capacity.

Visibility also empowers businesses to mitigate risks while optimizing costs and meeting long-term strategic goals. To harness these benefits, organizations must adopt forward-looking strategies that build resilience and adaptability.

Proactive Steps for Resilience

Leverage technology and clean data. AI-powered tools that centralize clean, accurate supply chain data provide the real-time insights needed to predict and respond to risks effectively.

Diversify the supplier base. Reducing reliance on single suppliers or regions enhances flexibility and mitigates risks from geopolitical or environmental disruptions.

Foster transparent partnerships. Collaboration with suppliers across all tiers fosters transparency, improves communication and builds trust during disruptions.

Develop robust contingency plans. Proactive strategies, such as dual-sourcing critical materials or holding buffer inventory, prepare businesses to maintain operations during disruptions.

These strategies address the common barriers to achieving visibility, such as siloed operations and fragmented data systems. By overcoming these obstacles, companies can position themselves to navigate challenges with agility and confidence.

Where Visibility Will Take Us

Companies that prioritize supply chain visibility now are setting themselves up to lead in an increasingly complex and fast-changing world. AI will continue to evolve, giving organizations more precise predictive tools to anticipate disruptions and act decisively before problems escalate.

Blockchain is gaining attention for its ability to improve visibility by securely documenting every step of the supply chain. For example, companies in industries such as food and manufacturing are exploring blockchain to trace raw materials and verify compliance with ethical and environmental standards. While still in its early stages, blockchain’s role in supply chain visibility is expected to grow, with industry adoption likely to accelerate in the coming years.

Outlook: In addition to advancing transparency and risk management, supply chain visibility will become a catalyst for innovation and sustainability. By strengthening supplier collaboration and building greater trust across networks, businesses can move from simply reacting to disruptions to proactively creating opportunities for resilience and growth. Companies that take action today will be ready to tackle tomorrow’s challenges — and turn them into opportunities for growth.
