DHL Express is suspending deliveries to the U.S. worth more than $800 because of a "significant increase" in red tape at customs resulting from the introduction of Donald Trump's new tariff regime. 

BBC News reports that, previously, packages worth up to $2,500 could enter the U.S. with minimal paperwork but the threshold has been lowered to $800.

The German delivery giant said it will temporarily stop shipments from companies in all countries to American consumers on April 21 "until further notice." Business-to-business shipments will still go ahead, "though they may also face delays," the company said.

DHL said that the change in customs requirements "has caused a surge in formal customs clearances, which we are handling around the clock."

The company said it will still deliver packages worth less than $800, which can be sent to the U.S. with minimal checks because of the de minimis rule. But that is set to expire on May 2.
