General Motors has announced plans to move production of its Buick compact SUV out of China and into the U.S. for domestic sales of the vehicle. 

CNBC reports that the next-generation version of the Buick Envision SUV will be built at GM's Fairfax Assembly plant in Kansas City, Kansas, starting in 2028. Envision models built at the Kansas City plant will exclusively be sold in North America, although production of the vehicle for other markets will continue in China.

"This decision further strengthens GM’s domestic manufacturing footprint and supports U.S. jobs, building on $5.5 billion in new investments announced across our U.S. manufacturing sites in the last year,” GM said in its announcement of the move.

GM had previously produced the Envision SUV entirely in China since 2017. The shift comes as automakers face mounting political pressure and higher tariffs from the Trump administration on Chinese-built vehicles, making U.S.-based production increasingly attractive for models aimed at the North American market. In June 2025, GM announced that it would be investing $4 billion over the next two years in its domestic manufacturing plants, along with plans to start producing the Chevrolet Equinox at its Fairfax Assembly facility. Two months later, Ford announced that it would be investing $2 billion to overhaul electric vehicle production at its Louisville, Kentucky plant.
