Three companies came together several years ago to create a service that has had a major impact on the way that product moves from Asia to the U.S. APL Logistics and Con-way Freight, acting on the suggestion of air-freight consultant Brian Clancy of MergeGlobal, combined resources to devise OceanGuaranteed. The offering addresses what the companies saw as a gap in the trans-Pacific marketplace. There was no day-definite service for surface transportation, leaving air freight as the only choice for less-than-containerload shippers with time-critical needs. Even worse, many were spending heavily on air, only to see product sit for two weeks in a warehouse. APLL's Bill Villalon and Con-way's Jim Gray talk about how they combined the economies of ocean and truck with the service guarantees of premium transport. OceanGuaranteed was a finalist in the 2008 Supply Chain Innovation Award competition, co-sponsored by the Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals and Global Logistics & Supply Chain Strategies.
