What’s going to happen to the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement?

July 1 marks the official kickoff of joint review of the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (although some of the parties have already begun discussions about what they would like to see in a renewed agreement). USMCA replaced the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) six years ago, and the signatories now must decide whether to extend it for another 16 years. If any one them objects, the agreement become subjec to annual review until an expiration date of 2036. So what’s likely to happen? On this episode, we discuss the maim concerns and possible outcomes with Jorge Gonzalez Henrichsen, chief executive officer of The Nearshore Company. We give particular attention to the automotive industry, Mexico’s number-one export sector. Can USMCA survive, especially given tensions between the three countries on topics such as immigration, and the mercurial bargaining style of President Trump? What are the consequences if it doesn’t?
