Three sailors were reported missing in an attack on a second Indian-crewed commercial vessel off the coast of Oman this week as tensions escalate between the U.S. and Iran.
The vessel, Settebello, had 24 Indian crew onboard, of which 21 were rescued, India’s Ministry of External Affairs said in a statement on its website on June 10. The country condemned the attack, calling for de-escalation.
“Our Embassy in Oman is closely monitoring the situation and proactively coordinating with the Omani authorities in the ongoing search and rescue operation,” the ministry said.
The statement did not specify who was responsible for the attack.
The incident reflects increased tensions in the Middle East as U.S. President Donald Trump said Iran would “pay the price” for delaying negotiations for an interim peace deal, after renewed attacks. Earlier this week, the U.S. military fired at an empty tanker, Marivex, for its suspected involvement in the Iranian oil trade. The vessel was crewed by 24 Indian nationals, who were rescued.
“The continuing incidents of attacks on shipping in the region are deeply worrisome and a direct result of the ongoing conflict in the region,” the ministry said on June 10 after the latest attack. “The targeting of commercial shipping and civilian infrastructure in the region must end.”
India reiterated its call for an “immediate de-escalation of tensions, and the conclusion of ongoing negotiations for a diplomatic solution so that peace and stability can return to the region.”
