McLane Co., Inc. has made its "Fresh on the Go" program available to convenience stores across the continental U.S. The nationwide cold-chain management program covers a variety of fresh products destined for retail sale, including yogurts, fruits, cheeses and ready-to-eat salads. The cold-chain service is part of a supply-chain infrastructure in which McLane has invested more than $1bn. It includes 20 automated distribution centers for delivery to every ZIP code in the U.S.; more than 8 million square feet of warehouse space, including more than 2.5 million square feet for refrigerated and frozen goods; a fleet of 2,000 multi-temperature trailers, and a variety of customized systems and documentation to ensure product integrity and safety in every part of the supply chain. A multi-step monitoring process constantly measures and records temperatures on the loading dock, in the distribution center, in transit and upon delivery. All fresh orders arrive at McLane's warehouse just prior to each regular delivery. Fresh on the Go's product selection encourages the use of small case packs and single-sell services wherever practical.
