For years many motor carrier rates have been calculated using standard mileage guides, such as those provided by ALK Technologies and other companies. These map-based miles often are not equal to actual mileage driven due to a variety of factors, including the fact that some routes are prohibited to certain types of freight or equipment. Today's technology can support reality-based mileage calculations, but is the marketplace ready for such a shift?
