Langley Joins Penn State Faculty to Head Center for Supply Chain Research

November 18, 2010
Pennsylvania State University

C. John Langley Jr. is joining the Penn State Smeal College of Business faculty as clinical professor of supply chain management and director of development for the Center for Supply Chain Research (CSCR).

A Penn State alumnus with three degrees from the University, Langley returns to his alma mater from the Georgia Institute of Technology. He served on the Georgia Tech faculty since 2001, including most recently as The Supply Chain & Logistics Institute (SCL) Professor of Supply Chain Management. He also served as director of supply chain executive programs, faculty director of the Supply Chain Executive Forum, and taught in the Executive Masters in International Logistics and Supply Chain M.S. program.

Langley will support Smeal's supply chain efforts in similar ways. He will lead supply chain classes at various levels and teach courses in Smeal's online Master of Professional Studies in Supply Chain Management Program. Langley will also serve as a member of CSCR's senior leadership team with responsibility for developing new opportunities for the center related to education programs, research projects and corporate sponsors.

Recognized as one of the world's leading scholars in his field, Langley has been involved in supply chain management and business logistics for more than 35 years. Prior to joining Georgia Tech, Langley was on the faculty at the University of Tennessee for 28 years, most recently as the John H. "Red" Dove Distinguished Professor of Logistics. Additionally, he co-founded the Center for Logistics Research, Supply Chain Forum, and Office of Corporate Partnerships at the University of Tennessee.

Langley is the co-author of three books on logistics and supply chain management. He has written numerous articles, technical reports, and presentations in these areas and has addressed countless conferences, forums, universities, groups, and industries.

He serves on the boards of Averitt Express, Inc., Forward Air Corporation, and UTi Worldwide, Inc., and actively consults with both logistics user and provider firms. Langley is past president of the Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals and has received the council's Distinguished Service Award. In 2007, he was recognized by the American Society of Transportation and Logistics as an Honorary Distinguished Logistics Professional for his long-term contributions and continuing commitment to the transportation logistics community.  In 1992, Smeal recognized him as an Outstanding Alumnus of its Business Logistics Program.

Langley holds a bachelor's degree in Mathematics, an MBA in Finance, and a Ph.D. in Business Logistics from Penn State.
