BASF and Jacobson: 30-Year Relationship Based on Trust and Rapport

January 7, 2009

BASF is the world's leading chemical company. They help their customers in almost all industries to be more successful. With high-value products and intelligent solutions, with innovations and new technologies, they open up new market opportunities for themselves and their customers.

BASF wanted to collaborate with a logistics provider who would engage in continuous improvement processes to drive cost reduction in their operations and stabilize management turnover. What started as a basic public warehousing challenge more than 30 years ago has grown today to include the management of a network operation of seven dedicated distribution centers in Edison, New Jersey; Wyandotte, Michigan; Palmyra, Missouri; McIntyre, Georgia; Freeport, Texas; Sparta, Tennessee; and Huntsville, Alabama.

After two decades of consistent and reliable service in the public warehousing arena, Jacobson took on the much-celebrated challenge of managing dedicated operations for BASF at their Northeast Distribution Center in October 2001. This opportunity allowed Jacobson to "partner" with BASF in their efforts to provide BASF customers and plant operations with regionalized network coverage. As hoped, this network increased performance levels and resulted in overall reduction of operating costs.

Since working together on the first successful dedicated operation in 2001, Jacobson Companies has watched this business sector with BASF grow from 260,000 square feet and 30 warehouse associates in one building to an impressive 1.8 million square feet of warehouse space and 190 associates, spanning the seven facilities. In 2009, Jacobson Companies will broaden its network of operations with BASF to an eighth facility, adding an additional 35 associates and 185,000 square feet to the network operation.

Jacobson has been successful at creating synergies among the seven distribution sites. By drawing from the customer-specific knowledge throughout the network to gain a larger view of BASF's total supply chain, Jacobson worked to design continuous improvement initiatives in all locations.

Today, Jacobson provides a full array of 3rd party services for BASF including, but not limited to, in/out warehouse activity, packaging, on-site customer service, shuttle support and many value added services.
