As the automotive industry wakes up to the safety challenges of managing human interactions with autonomous systems, ABI Research identifies camera-based driver monitoring systems (DMS) as the chief enablers of safe, semi-autonomous driving. The market is forecast to reach 17.5 million camera-based DMS shipments in 2026, the business intelligence group reports.
The increasing adoption of IoT within industrial settings will result in a substantial growth of the number of connected industrial devices, in particular industrial control devices like PLCs, according to ABI Research. The research firm estimates that over the period from 2014 to 2020, the number of connected industrial controllers will triple, growing at an average rate of 20 percent.
More than eight million building management systems (BMS) will be integrated with some form of Internet of Things (IoT) platform, application or service by 2020, according to an ABI Research report. However, like many suppliers in established markets today, commercial building management system vendors face both opportunities and threats when navigating the emerging IoT ecosystem.
Global revenues from smart home automation systems will grow at a 21-percent CAGR between 2015 and 2020, according to ABI Research. North America will account for the lion's share of the smart home automation system revenues in 2020, contributing close to 46 percent globally, followed by Europe and Asia-Pacific.
The worldwide consumer Wi-Fi equipment market increased 5 percent in 2014, surpassing 166 million unit shipments. "Shipments of devices which support the 802.11ac standard grew significantly last ear, representing more than 11 percent of total access point shipments," says Jake Saunders, vice president and practice director, ABI Research.
ABI Research expects IoT-connected wind and solar installations to grow at a CAGR of 21 percent between 2014 and 2020 with the total number of connections growing from the almost 2 million in 2014 to 6.3 million in 2020.
Worldwide public Wi-Fi hotspot deployments reached a total of 5.69 million in 2014, and will grow at a CAGR of 11.2 percent between 2015 and 2020. This includes public Wi-Fi hotspots deployed by mobile and fixed-line carriers as well as third-party Wi-Fi service providers. ABI Research expects the number of worldwide carrier Wi-Fi hotspots will reach 13.3 million in 2020.
Tracking rail carts with GPS and cellular could bring value to the rail sector; however, penetration rates on rail carts are currently very low (globally less than 50,000 in 2014), and growth is not forecasted to be very strong over the next 5 years, or even the next 10, according to ABI Research. Therefore, for the time being at least, it looks like RFID will dominate this sector.
A new market analysis by ABI Research finds that the revenues from integrating, storing, analyzing and presenting Internet of Things (IoT) data will reach 5.7bn in 2015. In the next 5 years, the market will expand dramatically, to an extent that in 2020 it is estimated to account for nearly one-third of all big data and analytics revenues.
