An Interview with David Hoppens, President of the Transportation Marketing and Sales Association (TMSA), on the Value of Association Membership

David Hoppens, president of the Transportation Marketing and Sales Association (TMSA), recently shared his views on the value of association membership in the exchange that follows.

What is the value of an industry association membership?

Industry associations are truly valuable, especially in the areas of education and networking, and TMSA is no different. Our annual conference is comprised of a comprehensive agenda featuring relevant industry topics delivered by dynamic speakers who are leaders in the transportation and logistics industry. Our goal is to provide topics that speak directly to our attendees' interests and needs.

Providing attendees the opportunity to network with their peers is a definite driver of an association's growth and success. During TMSA's annual conference, we provide attendees with numerous networking opportunities to participate in from receptions and roundtables to casual gatherings. These activities allow attendees to rekindle prior connections and ignite new business relationships in a relaxed and comfortable atmosphere.

How can individuals get the most out of their association memberships?

The best way is to simply get involved. Join a committee or serve on the association's board of directors. This will give you direct access to influential members within the organization and your industry, while helping you build leadership skills and develop a deeper relationship with those you serve with.

Participating in the association's activities, such as attending events, webinars and awards programs is another way to get involved and meet people in your industry.  TMSA's "Connections Events" allow members to network with other members regionally, all while hearing from a leading industry stakeholder on a pertinent topic. We also have webinars where members can receive educational value in the comfort of their own homes or offices.

How can small or large companies benefit from being a member of an industry association?

Regardless of the size and budget of your company, the best practice sharing as well as the industry benchmarking you will receive through your participation with an industry association is invaluable. TMSA members vary greatly in terms of size and budget, but the valuable benefits we provide our members helps to keep them engaged and informed year after year.
