The Base Rate Index, which excludes the impact of accessorial charges assessed by carriers, remained unchanged when compared to June 2013. Average fuel surcharges assessed by carriers remained flat also. Fuel was 19.25 percent of base rates in July versus 19.26 percent in June.
"Total cost of freight is down 3.4 percent from a year ago," says Doug Payne, president and COO of Nulogx, a transportation management solutions provider and the sponsor of the CGFI. "Base freight costs are 1.9 percent below last year."
