The trade association said the cardboard outer, metal lining, foil and paper lid and plastic cap made it "difficult to recycle."

The RA also criticised Lucozade Sport because it is covered in an “unnecessary” polymer shrink wrap sleeve that “means it is over-packaged and cannot be recycled.”

Black plastic meat trays used by supermarkets have also been highlighted because they cannot be picked up by the infrared technology at material recycling facilities, due to the pigment in them.

RA chief executive Simon Ellin also added cleaning spray bottles to his list of offenders, due to the use of several polymers and a metal spring in them.

Despite being a whisky drinker, Ellin added the tipple to his list because of the metal bottom and top to the sleeve covering the bottle and the metal cap.

“I have picked out these products as they are among the worst offenders when it comes to packaging that is difficult to recycle,” he said.

“We have got to ensure that the whole supply chain is involved, from designers to manufacturers to retailers to recyclers to local authorities and the householder, so that the products we buy can be recycled.
