Challenge: Global automakers have highly optimized supply chains, yet a lack of end-to-end visibility limits their ability to make further gains. For one carmaker, this made it difficult to provide accurate ETAs. In turn, this led to significant buffering and higher opportunity costs.
Solution: In partnership with HERE Technologies, the manufacturer ran studies using the HERE tracking solution to create a holistic view of its outbound supply chain. This process demonstrated how planners would be able to pre-emptively flag — and deal with — outbound supply chain irregularities.
Results: End-to-end visibility enabled an accurate review the entire outbound logistics spend and the identification of cost saving opportunities. Analyzing real-time trends instead of estimated data helped identify a storage overcapacity of approximately 33 percent at departure ports.
In addition, the process is expected to help the automaker’s dealer network improve service with live updates on the progress of vehicles ordered by customers.
