The amount of truck capacity running around in the freight marketplace varies widely, but one common dilemma persists: too much empty space.

U.S. Department of Transportation highway data reveals that out of every four trucks in operation, one is empty, two are mostly empty by weight, and just one is 51% or more full by weight. Clearly there’s a lot of space to be filled — and money to be saved by shippers. On this episode, we speak with Farah Ali, co-founder and chief technology officer of FreightWeb, a Seattle-based startup that has a solution to cutting down on the wasted space inside so many trucks. It involves a combination of adjustable pallet racks and software for optimizing load matching and planning. The system claims to be of particular benefit in the partial truckload segment, the often overlooked middle ground between truckload and less-than truckload.
