SAP AG and TechniData AG, its development partner for environmental compliance products, has made available a new tool for complying with European regulations on the use of chemicals. SAP Reach Compliance addressed the various tasks required by the European Registration, Evaluation and Authorization of Chemicals (REACH) legislation. The first REACH compliance deadline, running from June 1 to Nov. 30 of this year, is pre-registration. The remaining three REACH deadlines will occur in 2010, 2013 and 2018. According to SAP, the average chemical company will handle 15,000 compliance projects during the first several years under REACH. Tasks will include substance registration, usage and management, supply chain, financial and legal processes. REACH places the burden of proving the safety of chemical substances, products and consumer use on the manufacturer and importer. Chemical, consumer product, mill, oil and gas, pharmaceutical and other process manufacturers will be denied the right to trade non-compliant substances within the European Union. Key functions of SAP REACH Compliance include the management of data and tracking of chemicals used in particular preparations, electronic exchange of information related to processes involved in REACH-related supply-chain communications, monitoring of all authority-related processes, and tracking of supplier and communication data.
