Mentor Engineering has developed the Ranger, a rugged, in-vehicle mobile computer with an integrated suite of options. The unit includes an internal wireless modem, which supports both data and voice communications on GPRS and CDMA networks. According to Mentor, Ranger can accommodate hands-free voice calling and turn-by-turn driving prompts with integrated navigation. It is equipped with an internal 16-channel GPS receiver, magnetic stripe reader, Smart Card reader, and multiple inputs and outputs. Certified for use on major North American and European wireless networks, Ranger is designed for a wide range of fleet management and telematic needs, the vendor said. Programs within Ranger can be updated over the air with Mentor's XMobile Manager software suite.
