The South Korean shipbuilding giant Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) announced that it had secured a contract to build two liquified petroleum gas (LPG)/ammonia carriers. According to Offshore Energy, the deal, which is valued at $235 million, was signed by undisclosed shipowners in the Oceania region.

Samsung Heavy Industries said that the two very large ammonia carriers (VLACs) are scheduled to be delivered by the end of November 2027.

George Economou’s TMS Cardiff Gas, which already owns four eco-design VLACs, is believed to be the organization behind the order.

This contract represents the second deal for Samsung Heavy Industries since the beginning of 2024. Earlier this month, SHI won a contract from Cedar LNG to design, fabricate and deliver a floating LNG production unit (FLNG) in North America for roughly $1.5 billion. The floating LNG facility will be located in Kitimat, Canada and will have the capacity to export three million tons of liquefied natural gas each year. Onshore construction work on the project could begin as early as the second quarter of 2024 with delivery of the FLNG expected in 2028.
