Wesley Williams, vice president of supply chain with Daily Harvest, tells how the company adopted technology from Tive for tracking shipments and boosting overall visibility of perishable products. He’s joined by Raj Nagarajah, director of sales with Tive.

Daily Harvest is a “digitally native“ food manufacturer and consumer packaged goods brand, selling vegan and organic fruits and vegetables through its own website as well as in more than 2,000 retail stores.

The company’s challenge, Williams says, was to build in a level of resilience that ensured that frozen product remained at the desired temperature for safety and quality. Daily Harvest uses a lot of third parties, so it doesn’t own distribution facilities and trucks. It needed an additional means of making sure that its supply chain partners “were doing what they were supposed to be doing,” he says.

To track and monitor its shipments through the supply chain, Daily Harvest chose Tive from among several possible providers. Williams said the vendor had the right combination of unique projects and the lowest cost point.

“Logistics is hard,” notes Nagarajah, “but temperature control is a whole other layer.” Daily Harvest turned to Tive’s technology, including tags and temperature loggers, to ensure that there were no temperature issues in the downstream supply chain. “They were a growing brand, looking to scale quickly,” Nagarajah says. “That was definitely in our wheelhouse.”

Daily Harvest concluded that its supply chain partners were maintaining the proper level of quality and reliability for products in transit. But the real benefit of the technology, Williams says, is its ability to track conditions when shipments pass into the hands of entities with which the company has no direct relationship. “I need to make sure that I have the information available,” he says.
