An estimated 67 shipping containers have fallen off of a cargo ship and into the water at Southern California's Port of Long Beach.
According to a release from the port, the containers fell off the Mississippi cargo ship just after 9 a.m. on September 9, damaging a smaller clean air barge — a specialized vessel that acts as a "giant vacuum cleaner" for ship exhaust — that was connected to the cargo vessel at the time of the incident. Cargo operations were paused at Pier G, although no other terminals or port operations were affected.
The U.S. Coast Guard also established a 500-yard safety zone around the Mississippi, and has been issuing safety broadcasts every hour to warn other vessels to avoid the area. The Coast Guard is working to determine the cause of the incident.
