DB Schenker is now offering combined trucking and rail services from a single source, the business unit known as Hangartner AG. The company is providing pickup and delivery by truck, with freight consignments moving over the rails for the main portion of the transit. The goal is to get more shipments onto rail, said Karl Nutzinger, chief executive officer for Europe, in charge of European land transport at Schenker AG. In addition, the company has added features from other services within the Land Transport portfolio. For example, the new product is subject to the "end-to-end" quality system of DB Schenker Logistics' Land Transport services. Schenker said it will soon offer a shipment-tracking option on the intermodal network. The company is offering the new service on the north-south corridor through the country organizations of Finland, Sweden and Norway via Central Europe, and on to Italy. Schenker's intermodal operating center, headquartered in Zurich, Switzerland, will operate around 4,000 block trains a year, primarily using its dedicated rolling stock. Regularly scheduled services will be offered several times a week on fixed routes. Schenker operates its own terminals in Domodossola and Verona in Italy; it also has some 4,300 company-owned loading units available from a single source, along with additional logistics services. The company said it is preparing to extend the service to points in Western Europe.
