Why study environmental sustainability in the supply chain, writes American Shipper publisher Jim Blaeser in the executive summary of the report. "Isn't this just a fad? Won't consultants and analysts be onto something new in 2012? We thought so too." But not after two key issues drove the publication's staff to investigate the subject.
First, rumors suggest a few key shippers are injecting this subject into their buying protocol, Blaeser writes. If bellwether shippers are truly limiting their vendor networks based on environmental sustainability initiatives, that is clearly meaningful.
Second, readers have expressed a strong interest in understanding what their role could-or should-be when it comes to supporting their company's sustainability goals.
"Beginning in December 2010, nearly 200 transportation buyers completed a 25-question survey that provides a baseline from which we make comparisons, draw conclusions, and provide actionable recommendations.
"American Shipper's benchmarking studies aim to identify best practices by parsing winners from the pack and comparing the differences in their responses. In this case it's premature to declare anyone a 'winner;' instead this study seeks to find 'leaders' and the best practices they are creating.
