Rail Not Likely to Make Greater Use of GPS to Keep Tabs on Carts Soon

January 30, 2015
ABI Research
Tracking rail carts with GPS and cellular could bring value to the rail sector; however, penetration rates on rail carts are currently very low (globally less than 50,000 in 2014), and growth is not forecasted to be very strong over the next 5 years, or even the next 10, according to ABI Research. Therefore, for the time being at least, it looks like RFID will dominate this sector.

USC Tracks Dorm, Apartment Furniture with RFID Technology

January 6, 2015
RFID Journal
The University of Southern California housing office knew its housing facilities, on and off campus, had upwards of 60,000 pieces of furniture and appliances. But until the student housing office deployed a radio frequency identification system, tracking which items were at what locations, as well as which were broken, missing or due for replacement, required exhaustive manual inventories. Those inventory counts, typically conducted during summers, required the hiring of temporary workers and many hours of labor to catalog what was where.

Hundreds of recreational marijuana shops are slated to open in Colorado on Jan. 1. Once that happens, every package of buds or processed products, such as marijuana-laced brownies, will have an RFID tag attached to it, intended to help the state regulate product and ensure that it comes from authorized sources.

Brazilian Grocer Uses RFID to More Accurately Weigh Fish, Other Products in Its Cold Chain

October 30, 2013
RFID Journal
Grupo Pão-de-Açúcar (GPA) has found an RFID solution to a problem that previously affected both logistics and accounting for its Pão-de-Açúcar and Extra supermarket chains. The distribution of fish, as well as other products in its cold chain, presents significant challenges for the retailer. After all, fish do not have identical weights, and businesses work with average values per unit, resulting in differences between what theoretically was delivered to a store, what was really sold and the expected revenue generated by marketing.

French Utility Uses RFID Tech to Keep Tabs on Turbines, Parts

October 17, 2013
RFID Journal
While most energy in France is supplied by nuclear energy facilities, at times of high load, utility company Électricité de France (EDF) relies on natural gas to meet those increased demands. When those (usually dormant) natural gas turbines are powered up to supply additional energy, it is critical that they function properly.

Vintner Uses RFID Technology to Prevent Counterfeiting of Its Costly Wines

July 19, 2013
RFID Journal
Fine wines are vulnerable to counterfeiting or fraud, in large part due to their high value. A single bottle of French Bordeaux, from Chateau Le Pin, averages $3,000 and can be priced at up to $10,000 or more, making the trafficking of forgeries lucrative for counterfeiters. Photocopied labels, for example, can be attached to bottles of counterfeit wine, which can then end up being sold to consumers"”often at auctions, or at any weak link along the supply chain.
