August's Class 8 Truck Orders Down 35 Percent Year Over Year

FTR data shows that preliminary Class 8 net orders for August stood at 14,000 units, slightly above expectations and a 36 percent improvement over July. However, the Class 8 order activity for August was the weakest for that month since 2010 and down 35 percent from August 2015. Class 8 orders for the last twelve months have totaled 206,000 units.

This summer, dockworkers, truckers and railroads geared up for a surge of retail goods passing through U.S. ports that hasn't occurred. Imports are flat at major seaports on both coasts heading into peak shipping season, the stretch in late summer and early fall when retailers usually load up on imported toys, clothing and other merchandise to sell to holiday shoppers. If the trend holds, it will be the second year in a row without a traditional peak.

Daily rates for UPS U.S. air and international services will increase an average net 4.9 percent. UPS airfreight rates within and between the U.S., Canada and Puerto Rico, will increase an average net 4.9 percent, also effective Dec. 26, 2016. Further, UPS Freight announced an average net 4.9 percent general rate increase effective Sept. 19, 2016.
