Reports on ERP, Risk Management, Workforce Training, Voice, Inbound Transportation Coming This Month

April 21, 2011
Aberdeen Group

Aberdeen Group has announced publication of five research reports from its Enterprise Applications, IT Security, Retail and Banking, Supply Chain Management practices.

"To ERP or Not to ERP: In Manufacturing, It Isn't Even a Question," prepared by Kevin Prouty, research director, Enterprise Applications research practice, indicates that 26 percent of manufacturers have yet to implement ERP despite the benefits experienced by others, including reducing operating costs by 20 percent, administrative costs by 18 percent and inventory by 22 percent. ERP implementations also improve complete and on-time shipments by 17 percent and internal schedule compliance by 18 percent. "Governing Access, Controlling Costs," prepared by Derek E. Brink, Aberdeen research fellow, IT Security research practice, shows that governing end-user access to enterprise resources as part of an organization's IT Governance, Risk Management and Compliance (IT GRC) initiative helps enterprises to manage security risk (e.g., control access to key information assets, protect against error and fraud, enforce proper separation of duties) and address regulatory requirements (e.g., Sarbanes-Oxley, J-SOX, EuroSOX) while also reducing cost. According to "Workforce Training and Development: Customer-Centric Productivity for Retailers," prepared by Greg Belkin, Aberdeen research analyst, Retail and Banking research practice, as retailers endeavor to establish a seamless store-level shopping experience for consumers, these organizations are turning to formalized training and development to help develop their associates into a highly effective, informative, and revenue-generating consumer interaction point. A proliferation of cross-channel shopping alternatives such as mobile, social, and Web commerce has pushed effective customer service in the store to the forefront of competitive differentiation. Sixty-four percent of retailers cited the expectation of a highly knowledgeable associate as the leading workforce training and development motivator. In response, 55 percent of these organizations are providing formalized training as part of the on-boarding process. "Voice Technology meets the eCommerce Distribution Challenge," prepared by Bob Heaney, Aberdeen senior research analyst, Supply Chain Management research practice, reveals that two of the top three business pressures facing warehouse and distribution center operators center on efficiency and resource management, i.e., "doing more with less."

Many organizations have turned to voice enabled warehouse management technology to drive improvements in operational efficiency. The data suggest that voice users are more engaged, placing a far greater level of focus in balancing and optimizing
labor to address volumes and mix, reduce waste, and improve picking and shipping accuracy. To obtain a complimentary copy of the report, visit: http://www.aberdeen.com/link/sponsor.asp?spid=30410182&cid=7108&camp=2.

Also prepared by Bob Heaney is "Inbound Transportation Management: The Convergence of Planning, Optimization and Dynamic Execution," based on a survey of 181 companies documenting their processes and capabilities supporting inbound transportation management. The data indicate over 60 percent of all companies cited the need to gain control over shipment status and cost of their inbound volume as a key requirement, and suggest that companies lacking the foresight, manpower, focus, or systems to extend and share the visibility they have into their extended inbound supply chains are likely missing opportunities to control inbound costs and better utilize their transportation resources.
