Its new system was designed to consume less fuel, run cleaner, operate more quietly and deliver improved cooling performance, the company said. The new technology reduces engine power by 18 to 20 percent, resulting in 5- to 20-percent lower levels of fuel consumption, when compared with previous models over a full range of operating conditions. It will be applied to both of Carrier Transicold's trailer refrigeration platforms, the Vector diesel-electric hybrid and the X2 series of belt-driven units. Other enhancements include compressor and generator design modifications to improve unit efficiency, performance and reliability. The weight of Vector hybrids will be reduced by more than 8 percent, while X2 series units will require 24 percent less refrigerant, Carrier Transicold said. The technology is in part a response to more stringent testing by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, beginning in 2013, which will regulate emissions performance over a broader range of operating parameters. Units featuring the new technology will be available in limited quantities by the end of this year, and fully available in 2013, the company said.
