The radio frequency identification (RFID) division of Motorola, Inc.'s Enterprise Mobility business has entered into a strategic relationship with Intelleflex. The deal will result in "extended capability" RFID products. The partners will combine their technologies to create new platforms to be offered by both. According to Motorola, many emerging applications of RFID technology depend upon extended capabilities, with features such as large user memory, long-range operation, advanced security architectures, effective performance in difficult radio-frequency environments, and sensors for environmental data capture of items such as temperature exposure. Through the arrangement with Intelleflex, the company expects better to serve customers in such markets as cold-chain distribution and asset tracking. In recent years, the companies said, the focus of RFID development has shifted to "closed-loop" applications, where individual business entities invest in technology to solve targeted problems. In a related announcement, Motorola Ventures, the company's venture-capital arm, said it has increased its investment in Intelleflex, through a new financing round in partnership with new investor Arcapita Ventures. Intelleflex makes a variety of RFID-related products, including tags, readers and systems for supply-chain automation.
