Labelmaster, the manufacturer of products for compliance with regulations on the shipment of hazardous materials, is distributing the first release of the Emergency Response Guidebook (ERG) since 2004. The 2008 edition contains new information for first responders in the event of a spill or release of hazardous materials. It provides a standardized approach for handling such emergencies in the first 15 to 30 minutes of response. The guide contains crucial information concerning scene management and response procedures. New elements include more than 50 amendments to proper shipping names and identification numbers (United Nations numbers), updated lists of hazardous materials, an entry on lithium batteries, ethanol entries and identification numbers. In addition, a Initial Isolation and Protective Action Distance table has been split into two tables, to better facilitate initial incident-response actions for emergencies involving toxic inhalation hazards. The ERG was developed jointly by the U.S. Department of Transportation, Transport Canada, and Secretariat of Communications and Transportation of Mexico, with the collaboration of Argentina's center for information on emergency response.
