TNT and Con-Way Freight are cooperating on a new expedited service for the movement of heavyweight shipments between Europe and the U.S. The door-to-door offering combines air with road transport at both ends of the trip. It utilizes TNT's European road network, intercontinental air cargo services and Con-way's day-definite delivery network for less-than-truckload (LTL) shipments in the U.S. The service is initially being launched for shipments with origin in Europe and destination in any U.S. city. In the process, Con-way becomes TNT's primary U.S. transportation network provider. In the first phase of the rollout, TNT will manage cargo pickup in Europe; consolidation, tendering and management of direct intercontinental air-cargo service into the U.S., and Customs clearance and deconsolidation at its U.S. gateway at New York's Kennedy International Airport. Shipments will then be expedited via Con-way Freight's service center in Brooklyn, N.Y., becoming LTL moves for direct-to-door delivery within the continental U.S. According to the principals, the joint venture allows them to develop an expanded range of international freight services under their own brands, while drawing on network resources already in place between Con-way in the U.S. and TNT in the rest of the world. Con-way also operates a joint service with APL Logistics, known as the OceanGuaranteed program, for expedited movement of ocean freight from Asia to the U.S. TNT provides service linking more than 33 European countries through 414 depots. In another Con-way Freight development, the carrier said it is accelerating transit times between the Tri-Cities area of Washington state and eastern Idaho. The service will provide local agricultural businesses with faster deliveries during the region's peak planting season, Con-Way said. Next-day service, at a frequency of five days a week, was scheduled to begin March 30 and be available to shippers for approximately 14 weeks through July 2.
