Now that food has become a significant part of its business, Walmart is seeking to step up its procurement for food categories globally, in addition to its core hardlines classifications. The strategic importance of this initiative is further signaled by the choice of Ed Kolodzieski to head the newly structured operation as EVP. A rising star at Walmart , who joined the company with 20 years of experience in grocery management under his belt, Kolodzieski achieved positive results as head of Walmart's Neighborhood Markets division and then as head of Seiyu.
Combined with the new organizational structure in the U.S. (3 regions, each with its own president) and the changes in the walmart.com division (now headed by Wan Ling Martello), and the reorganization in Sam's Club, the initiatives announced in January are further evidence that Walmart intends to ensure that it is positioned effectively to compete with Metro AG , Carrefour and others as it expands internationally.
