"No other non-asset based provider has ever been able to track their shipments at the level of detail we offer. When you are delivering to a big-box retailer or a production line or a printing press, that transparency and the confidence it gives shippers really makes a difference."
Schumacher says compliance on the part of its network of approved, high-service carriers is what makes the system work. "We deliver on time 98 to 99 percent of the time, measured to the minute," Schumacher says. This level of service enables shippers to trust that they will know where their shipments are, which allows them to operate with fewer people, he says. "We give them a more valuable product at a lower cost."
Schumacher says this "new model" of brokerage has the potential to change the industry's bad image. "Most freight brokers stink," he says. "It is a manually operated business with a bunch of 20-plus kids trying to get business on one side of the room and a bunch more on the other side of the room trying to find their trucks. They have a lot of service failures and a lot of unhappy customers."
"Open Mile is a new class of brokerage with the reliability of an asset-backed carrier and the capacity and flexibility of a non-asset based provider."
