DHL Express has begun a trans-Pacific service in partnership with Polar Air Cargo, the subsidiary of Atlas Air Worldwide Holdings, Inc. The inaugural flight was set to take off from Hong Kong International Airport on Monday, Oct. 27, with a destination of Wilmington, Ohio. A block space agreement between the two companies guarantees DHL Express access to six Boeing 747-400F aircraft, operated by Polar Air Cargo between eight destinations in Asia and the U.S. DHL will utilize Polar Air Cargo's scheduled weekday flights from Los Angeles, Wilmington and New York via Anchorage to the Asian destinations of Hong Kong, Shanghai, Seoul and Tokyo. The partnership also covers an extended weekend schedule, with flights to Honolulu, Sydney, Sharjah and Leipzig. According to DHL, the arrangement will allow the company to improve its Time Definite product offering in those trade lanes. At the same time, DHL is extending its trans-Pacific services to include a connection to New York's JFK Airport, offering a time-definite service from Asia to the U.S. East Coast. Polar Air Cargo has been providing air lift to DHL Express, with two 747-400F aircraft, since March 31 of this year.
