Terminal Operating System Enhanced at Romanian Port

October 1, 2006
Global Logistics & Supply Chain Strategies

Navis says that its SPARCS Analytics and Monitor products, designed specifically for marine terminals, has been implemented by DP World's Constanta South Container Terminal (CSCT) to measure and scrutinize the "health and performance" of operations there.
Analytics and Monitor will enable CSCT management and staff at the Romanian port "to gain visibility into real-time operations, analyze historical performance, institutionalize best practices and track performance metrics specific to the CSCT operation," says Navis. SPARCS is the Oakland, Calif.-based company's terminal operating system.
"We want our people to have access to global data from a centralized repository," says Rob Humby, senior manager of international operations at DP World's head office, in Dubai. "We want to promote knowledge sharing, eliminate human error and standardize processes by allowing everyone to collect and view data the same way. Monitor and Analytics will help us improve performance by meeting these goals."
CSCT, reportedly the largest container port in the Black Sea, is among five DP World sites that have licensed Analytics and Monitor. Port of Djibouti Container Terminal, Pusan Newport Company, Asia Container Terminal and India Gateway Terminal are also expected to roll out the software. DP World, one of the world's top three container terminal operators, will license Analytics and Monitor at all its sites that are currently using the SPARCS terminal operating system, which includes 34 of its 52 terminals spanning 30 countries and five continents.
Monitor enables quick identification of operational problems and drill-down to identify root causes, says Rashid Abdulla, CSCT operations manager.
"This tool will reduce time and effort of the operations staff and will absolutely improve the teamwork by sharing information and improve communication within the team, particularly for planners and the executive staff," Abdulla says.
"I think Analytics will help our commercial department understand their customers better; it will allow us to better understand historical performance results in preparation for contracts or renegotiations," Abdulla says. "From an operations point-of-view, the Analytics product will improve capacity and productivity for sure. Moreover, it will reduce paper work and crane-log preparation time."
