Schneider National, a Green Bay, Wis.-based transportation and logistics services provider, has been named Intermodal Carrier of the Year by Wal-Mart Stores. In a separate development, the retailer has named Commodity Logistics Inc., Lockbourne, Ohio, a preferred provider of consolidation services to Wal-Mart suppliers.
"Schneider National provided outstanding intermodal service for Wal-Mart in 2004," says Tracy Rosser, vice president of Wal-Mart Corporate Traffic. "It is our pleasure to recognize their associates for commitment to quality and customer service. Their great support throughout 2004 has ultimately allowed us to better serve our customers."
Selection criteria for the award included revenue/growth, ease of doing business, communication, flexibility, customer service and follow-up/correction of errors.
Wal-Mart recognized 12 carriers this year, including in such categories as Small Package Carrier of the Year, Grocery Carrier of the Year, Rising Star Carrier of the Year and Innovative Carrier of the Year.

As part of its multi-vendor consolidation program, Commodity Logistics will combine Wal-Mart suppliers' less than truckload orders into full truckload quantities for delivery to Wal-Mart's regional distribution centers. Ideally, Wal-Mart's LTL suppliers will realize improved delivery reliability and efficiency, along with reduced costs associated with full truckload transportation rates, as opposed to more costly LTL rates.
The action involving Commodity Logistics is part of Wal-Mart's supplier Remix initiative, a program designed to improve store efficiency, minimize stock-outs on fast-selling merchandise, and increase sales. The Remix program was successfully tested last year in Florida and is in the process of national rollout. According to Wal-Mart executives, the program will be fully functioning on a national basis by 2007.
