Motorola Inc.'s Enterprise Mobility Solutions unit is introducing a new series of radio frequency identification (RFID) readers. The tools will help companies gain increased visibility into business operations while boosting efficiency, the vendor claimed. Motorola's DS9808-R is a hybrid presentation imager, representing a new category of RFID and barcode scanners for the retail point of sale (POS). It is designed for both hands-free and handheld barcode scanning and RFID reading in a POS environment. It combines 1D and 2D barcode scanning with an RFID reader, while offering built-in support for emerging mobile retail applications, including the ability to read barcodes and images from a mobile phone display. The unit enables RFID use for POS checkout, price checking, new inventory commission, separated inventory identification and returns processing. Motorola's new MC9090-G RFID ER handheld reader employs the features of its existing MC9090-G, adding extended-range (ER) barcode scanning. It can capture 1D barcodes from as close as four inches to as far as 40 feet, according to the vendor. The unit includes support for U.S. and Asia-Pacific frequencies, along with the European standard ETSI EN 302 208. The new products are expected to be available in the second quarter of 2010, Motorola said.
