TransCore reports that August spot freight volume exceeded August 2009 levels by 81 percent and achieved the highest level for the month since 2005.
On a month-over-month basis, load volume was 12 percent lower in August than in July. Historically, spot market loads have declined from July to August in four of the past five years. The exception was August 2009, when freight began to recover from the worst of the recession.
Spot market loads for vans declined by 14 percent in August, compared to July. TransCore expects the back-to-school retail season will fuel an increase in van freight, in particular. Van loads have increased month-over-month on the spot market in August in four of the past five years. The exception was 2008, just before the crisis in the financial markets, and the only other recent year when van loads declined in August on a month-over-month basis.
