An estimated 32 containers have now been recovered from the water around the MV Mississippi cargo vessel at the Port of Long Beach.

Cargo operations were paused at Pier G, although no other terminals or port operations were affected by the incident.

The new terminal will sit on the St. Lawrence River, just northeast of the city of Montreal, Canada’s second-largest urban area.

The terminal project has been under consideration since the 1980s, when the port authority bought the land in Contrecoeur.

A deepwater port is expected to open up access for ships moving rare earth minerals, and provide the U.S. with a critical regional hub for its Arctic supply chain.

The port has been owned by Turkey’s sovereign wealth fund since 2017 and is operated by TCDD, the national railways authority.

The company has already missed a chance to ink a definitive agreement before a window for exclusive talks with the buying consortium expired in late July.

Meanwhile, international port operator and logistics service provider DP World reported strong container volumes for the first half of 2025 as well.

The Panama Canal Authority expects to open a tender to operate a port on the Atlantic coast and another on the Pacific, both of which would connect to a liquefied petroleum gas pipeline.
