The racks can be configured to fit up to six cars in one intermodal container. Conventional fixed-rack equipment can only accommodate two medium-sized cars, APL noted. In addition, the company said, AutoDirect racks fit easily with standard containers from any carrier, allowing for the delivery of small batches to destinations that traditional roll-on/roll-off transportation does not reach. The racks are removable, collapsible and returnable, and are certified by independent quality auditors. APL Logistics recently completed a pilot shipment using AutoDirect, moving seven 40-foot high-cube containers and one standard 40-footer with 28 cars from China to Thailand. The company's automotive team provides customized containerload design plans, carrier management, shipment booking, supervised container loading at factory or hub, customs clearance and intermodal shipping supervision.
