A new study on transportation procurement and payment by Aberdeen Group emphasizes the importance of gaining control over transportation spend. Aberdeen surveyed more than 200 companies during its research, finding several notable differences in the pressures and actions various companies are taking.

Industry leaders were found to be:

• 1.85-times as likely as Industry Average companies, and 4.3-times as likely as Laggards to have a centralized spend management platform in place, with multi-language and multi-currency capabilities;

• 1.6-times as likely as Industry Average companies, and 6-times as likely as Laggards to use an electronic routing tool for daily carrier selection.

"According to this study, it is the combination of technology with process and organizational changes that will create the most impact." says Bob Heaney, senior research analyst, Aberdeen Group. Top performers are much further ahead and have clearly separated themselves from the pack, having 22 percent more carriers who are compliant with contractual cost.
