Consignment-specific security information can now be sent by the customer to the airline electronically. The electronic Consignment Security Declaration (eCSD) has been officially recognized by the German Federal Aviation Office for transport from Germany. According to Lufthansa Cargo, the purpose of introducing the eCSD is to provide evidence in electronic format that appropriate measures have been taken to avoid risks in the transport of air freight and air mail. The declaration contains information on how, when and by whom a consignment has been secured. Lufthansa Cargo carried out extensive tests on the process with forwarder Kühne & Nagel and the International Air Transportation Association (IATA). By 2015, Lufthansa Cargo said, paperless air freight should be the standard for all of the airline's connections.
