The Port of Los Angeles has developed a carbon calculator to allow ports to estimate greenhouse gas emissions from their operations, and deploy strategies for reduction. Port can use the free online tool to compute the total amount of carbon dioxide emissions from sources associated with their operations, including port-specific sources such as fleet vehicles, cargo-handling equipment and harbor craft. The information can then be used to devise plans for reducing a carbon footprint through the calculator's Reduced Emissions Scenarios feature. The calculator is a project of the World Ports Climate Initiative, a collaboration launched in 2008 with the International Association of Ports and Harbors. The Port of Los Angeles, one of 59 WPCI members, took the lead in developing the tool. Facilitated through the IAPH, more than a dozen port authorities and organizations have collaborated on the project through the WPCI's Carbon Footprinting Subgroup. The calculator can be adjusted to measure emissions in the metric or English systems. A higher-end version, priced at $450, allows users to save and export data.
